The Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Toronto and Eastern Canada joins all Canadian Catholics in welcoming Pope Francis on his “penitential pilgrimage” to the First Nations people of Turtle Island. It is with a profound sense of sorrow and hope that, as Ukrainian Canadians, we participate in this “Walking Together”. Sorrow, because as a people, over the centuries we have also suffered the indignity and evils of colonialism, and we know the pain of being denied our language, history and culture. The history of the Ukrainian people is filled with the horror of abuse, violence, and genocide, especially in the last century. This reality continues to be evident in today’s invasion of Ukraine.


We mourn with our brothers and sisters, the first inhabitants of this land and their descendants, and we recognize the profound loss that they experience. But we are also able to speak of hope. When the first Ukrainian settlers were brought to this land, Canadian government promises masked a harsh reality. The physical environment and social challenges that they encountered were brutal. However, in the midst of hardship, the one consistent source of encouragement and support came from their First Nations neighbours. Our community remembers the many stories of how local indigenous communities reached out to our people, especially during the first bitter winters, and taught them how to survive and flourish in this new land. When immigrants to this country from Ukraine were derided for their foreign tongue and customs, they were often comforted by the people of the land.


And so, we thank our First Nations people for the hope they brought our forebearers, and today we pray that we may bring them hope by reminding Canadians that we all have a responsibility to listen with an open and understanding heart to the pain colonialism has caused our First Nations; to speak the truth of the evils that they have and at times continue to endure; and to work and pray, together with the Holy Father, for healing and true reconciliation among all Canadians.


On June 7th 2022, Fr. Mitred Volodymyr Yanishevsky, Rector of the Cathedral, has marked a significant mile stone of his priestly ministry – 30th Anniversary of his priestly ordination. On the behalf of Bishop Bryan and all Eparchial clergy, we send our best wishes to Fr. Volodymyr and his lovely family, who wholeheartedly shares in many aspects of his priestly ministry. We pray our Lord to bless him with good health, strength and success in all his pastoral endeavors. May the Most Holy Mother of God keep Fr. Volodymyr and his family under Her protection for many wonderful and blessed years to come.

A Moleben for peace in Ukraine was led by our Bishop Most Rev. Bryan Bayda, Apostolic Administrator of the Eparchy of Toronto and Eastern Canada and Most Rev. Andriy Peshko, Bishop of the Eastern Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada at St. Josaphat's Cathedral on April 1st.
