The Royal Alexandra Theatre is a national historic landmark and the oldest continuously operating legitimate theatre in North America. It was granted official letters patent by Edward VII, making it the first truly royal theatre on the continent. The theatre is a masterpiece of beaux-arts architecture and holds several distinctions, including being one of the first air-conditioned buildings in North America and the first theatre deemed legitimately fireproof.

The Royal Alexandra Theatre has seen performances by legendary artists such as John Gielgud, Mary Pickford, the Marx Brothers, Edith Piaf, and Paul Robeson, among many others.

The theatre was purchased by Edwin Honest Ed Mirvish in 1963, who closed it for extensive modernization, repair, and renovation. The old house was restored to its early splendor. In 2016, the theatre underwent another restoration project, bringing it into the 21st century while preserving its historic charm.

Visitors can arrive by car, rail, or transit. If arriving by car, the theatre is just north of the Gardiner Expressway. Those coming by rail can walk from Union Station, or take the TTC subway to the St. Andrew station. The theatre is also located near the St. Andrew subway station for those using transit.

The main level of the theatre is accessible, with automated doors at the front entrance, private barrier-free restroom facilities, and access to various services. However, the theatre does not have an elevator or escalator, and stair access is required to reach certain seating levels and areas within the building.
